The City of Laguna Beach is now accepting applications for the position of Maintenance Supervisor - Water Quality. The Maintenance Supervisor will, under administrative direction, supervise and participate in the work of the Water Quality Department, specifically focusing on the City's wastewater system and lift stations. This position reports to The Senior Operations Supervisor and has direct supervisory responsibility over other Water Quality staff.
Qualified candidates will possess:
- Four years of full-time journey-level wastewater operations experience including maintenance of the lift station operations, their control systems, SCADA equipment, troubleshooting electrical components, and emergency generator operations.
- Two years of full-time experience supervising staff and/or contractors in the performance of related wastewater duties.
- A valid California Class B driver's license with tank vehicle endorsement (must not have an air brake restriction or an automatic transmission restriction).
- Ability to obtain a CWEA Grade II Collection System Maintenance certification within one year of hire.

The selection process may include any of the following elements: Training and Experience Evaluation, a structured panel interview, and other job-related assessment tools developed to predict successful job performance. At the conclusion of selection testing, names of candidates deemed eligible for hire will be placed on an employment eligibility list. Appointing authorities review all job related qualifications of those deemed eligible for hire before making selection decisions.
All prospective Maintenance Supervisors must submit proof of qualifications and required education and successfully pass a police background check, fingerprint check with the Department of Justice, and a pre-placement physical (includes pre-placement drug testing).
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
General:
- Schedules, coordinates and supervises work crews and individual staff
- Determines work priorities and assigns work to subordinate personnel accordingly
- Provides necessary training and demonstration on proper use of equipment and tools (e.g., hand tools, heavy equipment, trucks, etc.)
- Enforces and promotes safety regulations, workplace practices, and City policies and procedures
- Prepares written reports, various documents, and other maintenance-related office work as required
- Assists in selection, training (e.g., on-the-job programs, formal workshops, etc.), and evaluation of assigned employees
- Conducts inspections as necessary
- Receives calls for emergency service and may be required to respond during non-scheduled work hours, including evenings, holidays and weekends
- Performs other related duties as assigned
Water Quality Specific:
- Supervises maintenance and inspection of sewer system, lift stations and wet wells, including rebuilding and installing pumps as necessary
- Plans, schedules, prioritizes, and assigns maintenance and repair work in consultation with the Senior Operations Supervisor
- Communicates status of repairs to appropriate personnel, working cooperatively to schedule repairs in accordance with established and special operational priorities
- Requests supplies and equipment for work projects
- Maintains records of purchase orders
- Maintains inventory of all lift station equipment
- Maintains obsolescence records for scheduling lift station equipment replacements
- Oversee and assist Instrument and Electrical Technician in duties as needed
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Any combination demonstrating the ability to effectively and successfully perform the duties of the position is considered qualifying. A typical combination is as follows:
Experience:
- Four years of full-time journey-level wastewater operations experience including maintenance of the lift station operations, their control systems, SCADA equipment, troubleshooting electrical components, and emergency generator operations.
- Two full-time years of experience supervising staff and/or contractors in the performance of related wastewater duties.
- Education: Graduation from high school or equivalent, preferably including or supplemented by course work related to the division assignment. Course work or training in supervision is desirable.
License/Certificate Requirements:
- A valid California Class B driver's license with tank vehicle endorsement. Must not have an air brake restriction or an automatic transmission restriction.
- The incumbent must be able to provide a DMV printout, a current medical card and successfully pass a police background check.
- A fingerprint check with the State Department of Justice, a pre-placement medical exam and drug test are also required.
- Ability to obtain a California Water Environment Association (CWEA) Grade II Collection System Maintenance certification within one year of hire. (Note: Please upload any CWEA certifications to your application)
