Full-Time Benefited Job Opportunity: ASSISTANT CITY ENGINEER The City of Buena Park is seeking an experienced professional to plan, manage, and coordinate the activities and operations of the Engineering Division. The successful candidate will report directly to the Director of Public Works/City Engineer and act on his behalf during absences. Under direction of the Director, this position supervises a staff of eleven and prepares and implements a $14.6 million Capital Improvement Program. An experienced professional, the Assistant City Engineer plans, manages, and coordinates the activities and operations of the Engineering Division, which includes design and construction services including civil design, environmental administration, traffic services, and public works inspection projects and permitting services. As a member of the Public Works Management Team, this position requires the ability to motivate, mentor, and develop staff. The Assistant City Engineer leads by example, and cultivates strong and effective relationships with other city departments, management, consultants, contractors, developers, governmental officials, public and private representatives, and the general public. This position also prepares and presents departmental plans, studies and recommendations at Commission and City Council Meetings and performs other work as required. THE IDEAL CANDIDATE The ideal candidate will have significant civil engineering experience in a mid-sized City with outstanding communication and public presentation skills, with the ability to be a critical thinker and problem solver. This position requires the ability to work extended or unusual hours in order to meet the needs of the department, oversee capital projects, including disaster response services, complete reports, attend business and community meetings, and attend planning commission, traffic commission, and council meetings or events as needed. The City is interested in attracting a progressive and dynamic leader with a Bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year college or university in Civil Engineering, or a related field AND eight years of professional project management experience involving civil engineering work, which includes design, administration, and inspection of public works construction projects and rights-of-ways, and the plan review of private sector development projects is required. College-level coursework or certifications in the principles of project management and employee supervision are desirable. Valid Class C California driver license, acceptable driving record, and evidence of insurance are required. Registration in the State of California by the Board for Professional Engineers, Land Surveyors and Geologists as a Civil Engineer is required. Registration in the State of California by the Board for Professional Engineers, Land Surveyors and Geologists as a Traffic Engineer is highly desirable.
