POSITION: 20180283 Engineering Technician DEFINITION: Under the supervision of the Engineering & Surveying Technical Support Supervisor, performs paraprofessional engineering work in the support of the City’s engineering function including plan review, utility and infrastructure inspection, routine plan and specification development, mapping, surveying, and standardized engineering studies. This position also organizes and directs the operation of staff engaged in land and engineering surveys, including training in survey work methods, and reviewing of survey work done by others. PRINCIPAL DUTIES: Perform design projects. Research project requirements. Prepare plans, time and material costs, and specifications. Participate in necessary meetings and conferences. Administer administrative processes for specific project. Review plans according to City specifications. Identify plan issues and redlines documents. Review and consolidate comments. Administer plan review process for department ensuring that appropriate reviews have been completed, deadlines met, and documents are complete. May respond to routine plan inquires and questions from developers, contractors, and other departments. Conduct engineering studies and research under direction of an engineer. Perform field studies and survey work. Schedule locates and field tests. Respond to routine public complaints and questions. Coordinate with or refers primary engineer. Maintain related documentation. Research and update technical manuals and materials. Perform and verify all mapping work and documentation pertaining to projects. May perform project management of minor improvement and construction projects. Perform construction inspection services on various projects, which may include development; street, storm drainage, and concrete rehab, maintenance and repair; capital improvement projects; and federal aid projects. Perform complete reporting requirements for these projects. Perform GIS tasks and duties as assigned. Perform a variety of survey work; operate theodolite, levels, data collector, total station, GPS and related equipment. Make and check mathematical calculations related to surveying and basic engineering. Collect, research and analyze plans, notes, and legal descriptions to assist in conducting survey work. Maintain accurate permanent, public survey records in the form of field notes sketches and files. Perform design work in the absence of plans. Stake construction projects from plans provided by staff and consultants. Adjust, clean, and maintain survey equipment. Maintain a safe working environment. Establish acceptable traffic control for work sights. Performs essential duties and additional tasks in a manner which enhances City Attributes. WORKING ENVIRONMENT: Work is performed indoors and outdoors. Requires frequent visits to the field, which may involve exposure to extreme weather conditions, animals, dust, fumes, smoke, and gases. Requires the frequent operation of a motor vehicle, working around moving vehicles, including high traffic areas, reading, and writing, detailed work, working alone or closely with others. Work requires vision sufficient to inspect work sites for existing conditions. Work requires the ability to communicate effectively with employees, contractors, and the public. Must be able to compute a variety of engineering related calculations, check plans, and verify their accuracy. Work will also include confined space entry. QUALIFICATIONS: Any combination of education and experience equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade supplemented by the completion of college level courses in engineering , and surveying and one to two years of paraprofessional engineering work specifically related to civil engineering or surveying. Special Qualifications: Possession of a valid Colorado Driver License.
