The Community Development Department includes Planning Professionals, Engineers, Building Inspectors, Codes Enforcement Officers and Support Staff all working towards a shared mission of providing professional services related to land development and property maintenance to enhance, maintain, and develop the City's growth in a manner to provide positive development opportunities and maintain a high quality of life. This position also works directly with the Planning Commission that is comprised of 11 Planning Commissioners and meets twice a month. Department Management: Oversees the selection, training, evaluation and development of Community Development Department personnel. Direct and indirect supervisory responsibilities include assessing and monitoring workload, allocation of duties and responsibilities, and internal reporting relationships, conducting performance evaluations and working with employees to develop individual goals and objectives. Boards, Council and Commissions: Provide staff support and professional guidance to the Planning Commission, Board of Zoning Appeals Board, Shawnee Downtown Partnership and City Council meetings. Professional Meetings: Meets with and provides guidance to developers, architects, engineers and realtors to discuss potential and proposed projects. Economic Development: Serves as a member of the City’s Economic Development Team (EDT). Proactively supports the City's vision of quality growth through the development of appropriate engineering and design standards and conformity with those standards. Organizational and Department Goals: Works collaboratively with the City Manager and Department Heads towards implementing the long-term vision for the City; and, toward cooperative problem solving approaches to common issues. Anticipates and plans for the Planning, Development Engineering, Codes Enforcement and Building Inspection needs of the community. Ensures the development and fulfillment of the Department mission. Community Involvement: Meets and interacts frequently with the general public, elected officials, civic groups and other governmental agencies by advising or providing technical assistance on planning and development related matters. Attends and represents the department at various public functions and meetings. Makes presentations on department activities and planning related topics. Budgeting and Financial Management: Supervises the development and administration of the Department's annual budget. Manages large purchases or projects approved by the City Council. Aware of and ensures application is made for grants relevant to planning activities of the City. When awarded, ensures the proper administration of grant funds. Master’s Degree with course work in urban planning, engineering, public administration, or a closely related field; Bachelor's Degree may be substituted, provided AICP, PE or an equivalent certification has been achieved |
