THE AGENCY The Transportation Agency for Monterey County (TAMC) is a countywide transportation-planning agency responsible for developing long range transportation plans and distributing state and federal transportation grants. With 15 full-time equivalent staff and a 17-member Board of Directors, TAMC is a high energy, service-oriented agency. THE POSITION Opening for a Transportation Engineer will be filled at the appropriate level (assistant engineer to senior engineer) in the job classification system based on qualifications. See attached for details on TAMC’s excellent employee benefits.
THE IDEAL CANDIDATE • A strong project manager with a background in municipal public works design and construction principles. • An initiative taker who can follow through in timely manner on detailed assignments. • An enthusiastic, positive person who has a pleasant customer service attitude. • A team player that can maintain effective interpersonal relationships with staff and the public. • A good communicator with effective writing and oral presentation skills. SIGNIFICANT DUTIES • Act as project manager for local, state and/or federally-funded transportation projects. • Perform professional civil and transportation engineering work in the field and office on a variety of complex projects. • Prepare consultant requests for proposals, coordinate the selection of consultant contracts for various designs, studies and documents, and manage consultant contracts. • Oversee and participate in the preparation of contract documents, including advertisements for bids, instructions to bidders, detailed specifications and contract bonds. • Provide technical engineering assistance for various local agencies; prepare preliminary studies, reports, designs, calculations, project cost estimates, plans, specifications and engineering estimates. • Coordinates engineering work with cities, county, State and federal agencies. • Make presentations to the public and decision-making bodies. Write correspondence and staff reports.
QUALIFICATIONS • Minimum of three and one-half years’ experience in civil or transportation engineering or related work for appointment at the Assistant Engineer level or above. • Knowledge of transportation planning and traffic engineering theory, principles and methods (design, construction methods and techniques, strength, traffic engineering, modeling, forecasting, field data collection, and statistical analysis). • Working knowledge of Caltrans and federal-aid project development processes. • Registration as a Civil or Traffic Engineer in California is required for appointment to the Associate or Senior Engineer level. If successful candidate holds a valid Civil Engineering registration in a different State, California registration may be attained within six months of start date. • A valid California Driver’s License is required at time of appointment. • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing, including: preparation of reports, studies, and plans utilizing technical and statistical information; and, use pf computer systems and software applications for data analysis, report writing, and oral presentations. • Ability to use Computer Assisted Design (CAD) and Geographical Information System (GIS) software is desirable. • Education: equivalent to a Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited college or university with major work in Civil Engineering.
