If so, the City of Harrisonburg's Public Works Department's Traffic Engineer position may be the right career for you! Public Works Department. Full-time position with benefits. Preferred hiring range: $51,792 - $59,571. Position leads the transportation management program, developing and executing transportation/traffic plans; leads employees and oversees the traffic data collection/analysis process; maintains and/or supervises the management network of traffic signals, communications equipment and related software. Position performs detailed traffic studies to measure traffic volume, speed, and contributing factors and analyzes collected data to identify and forecast traffic flow, identify safety problems, and opportunities for improvements; administers traffic signal timing, coordination and time-of-day plan development; prepares studies to recommend transportation safety and efficiency improvements; evaluates traffic control signage and pavement marking design and makes recommendations for improvements or adjustments to improve traffic safety and efficiency. Position assists in the development, implementation and maintenance of the Event Plans and Incident Management Plan; staffs, assists with and/or participates in the activities of multiple commissions and committees; participates in the development of long range transportation plans and other planning initiatives of the Department. Physical Requirements: This is medium work requiring the exertion of 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Work requires climbing, balancing, stooping, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, and grasping; vocal communication is required to for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for preparing and analyzing written or computer data; this position may be required to work at a computer for extended periods of time and is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions. Minimum Qualifications: Undergraduate degree from an accredited college or university with a major in civil engineering or a related field, with coursework in engineering, transportation or traffic management. A combination of education and experience equivalent to an undergraduate degree may be considered. Valid driver's license required. Preferred Qualifications: Minimum of one year of professional, related work experience (engineering, traffic management, operations or similar). Some experience in GIS, traffic signal installation, traffic control systems, maintenance and repair of traffic signals. Experience utilizing traffic management software, video detection systems, Trafficware Synchro Studio, traffic controllers and/or map creation or similar software. Special Requirements:
