The City of San Mateo Public Works Department is Looking for Two Senior Engineers Why Join our Department? The City of San Mateo is seeking two Senior Engineers, for the Clean Water Program (CWP) and for Capital Improvement Program (CIP) Delivery/Construction, who are highly motivated, experienced, seek professional growth, and desire to lead in the delivery of capital improvement projects. To this end, the Senior Engineers will help lead efforts utilizing networking skills and developing new strategies and tactics to accomplish short and long-term project deliveries, while sustaining the City’s missions, visions and goals. The Public Works Department is committed to high performance levels and standards, utilizing best practices relative to performance management and team-oriented approaches. The Department supports staff development through a variety of internal and external training opportunities. Each Senior Engineer will be given the opportunity to provide and participate in critical team leadership undertakings. As managers, the Senior Engineer role will include responsibility for ensuring the best possible performance of each employee and accomplishing the collective services, goals, projects, initiatives, and work plans of the Department and City. What You’ll Do The CWP Senior Engineer’s key assignments align with the CWP’s goals and drivers, which are to 1) replace aging wastewater treatment and collection system infrastructure, 2) build capacity assurance and meet regulatory requirements, and 3) align with the City’s sustainability goals. The Senior Engineer will manage City and Consultant staff to successfully complete these goals and drivers. In addition, responsibilities may include leading, coordinating, and/or supporting a variety of the CWP functions, which include: program management, departmental and interdivisional coordination, change management, risk management, procurement, design delivery, program controls (funding, budgeting, and scheduling), environmental and permit compliance, outreach and engagement, and construction management. The CIP Delivery/Construction Senior Engineer’s key assignments include leading staff and managing contractors in the delivery of complex capital improvements projects in a dynamic environment with a multitude of stakeholders, improving upon processes and standards to increase efficiencies, and maintaining a sensitivity to economic, social, and technical issues. Effective communication skills and the ability to recognize the interconnectedness of the various disciplines and stakeholders are critical to the success of this position. An Engineering Assistant and five Construction Inspectors report directly to the Senior Engineer in CIP Delivery/Construction. Under the direction of an Engineering Manager, the Senior Engineers will perform the duties relative to their position.
