San Juan County Public Works, Engineering Division is responsible for the construction and maintenance of facilities and programs that support public transportation. We have an opportunity for an Engineering Technician (Level III or IV) or a Survey Technician to join our civil engineering team in the beautiful San Juan Islands.
Basic Duties: Engineering Technicians perform technical engineering work in such areas as design, construction, inspection, property acquisition, computer-aided drafting, traffic and planning. Level IV Technicians serve as lead workers with responsibility for training and overseeing the work of other technicians and/or have special program or project responsibility. Survey Technician manages and performs a variety of land surveying assignments under the supervision of the County Surveyor and in compliance with the Washington Administrative Code (WAC) and the Revised Code of Washington (RCW) related to surveying.
Minimum Qualifications: All positions require possession of a valid Washington State driver’s license and the ability to obtain and maintain a valid first aid card and flagger's card within 90 days of employment.
Engineering Technician III: Two years vocational training or Associate Degree in technical engineering, and four years’ experience in technical engineering work; OR any combination of education and experience which provides the applicant with the knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the essential job functions. Journey level skills with computers. Some knowledge of: • technical engineering practices, methods and standards related to areas of assignment. • algebra, trigonometry and geometry. • computerized records management systems. • surveying principles, terms, concepts, techniques and procedures. • technical manuals and specifications.
Engineering Technician IV: High school diploma, or equivalent, and four years vocational training or BS degree in engineering, and four years’ experience in technical engineering work; OR any combination of education and experience which provides the knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the essential job functions. Advanced computer skills. Some knowledge of: • technical engineering practices, methods and standards related to areas of assignment. • algebra, trigonometry and geometry. • computerized records management systems. • computer aided drafting systems. • surveying laws and standards • applicable county codes • state laws.
Survey Technician: Registration as a land-surveyor-in-training (LSIT) in the State of Washington OR the legal standing to apply for certification as an LSIT in accordance with the Washington State Department of Licensing; or obtain within 6 months of hire. Four years of progressive land surveying experience working under the direction of a licensed land surveyor (LS). Ability to demonstrate knowledge and experience in the principal duties of the job.
