Automotive Parts and Services Technician
The City of Concord is seeking an experienced automotive professional to serve as the next Automotive Parts and Services Technician in the Fleet Division of the http://www.cityofconcord.org/page.asp?pid=5118.
The ideal Automotive Parts and Services Technician candidate is someone who: • Possesses good organizational skills and ability to track orders, communicate status of orders, and complete all required paperwork associated with the ordering, transferring, returning, stocking and sale of parts; • Can look up parts, demonstrate good computer skills, be able to clearly communicate via phone, and enjoys working with a team of professionals; • Can effectively administer the parts warehouse, ensuring right-size inventory, and accurately administer the Vehicle Management Software (FASTER Win); • Can establish vehicle priorities quickly, and identify and resolve problems and make sound decisions; • Plans and administers the vehicle/equipment preventive maintenance program; • Believes in teamwork and is able to work collaboratively with other teammates and vendors; • Continuously looks for innovative ideas and ways to streamline and operate efficiently; • Thrives in a fast-paced environment, handling multiple tasks simultaneously, while making logical decisions and meeting deadlines; • Possesses strong knowledge of various computer software programs Word (word processing), Excel (spreadsheets), Outlook (email) and Internet Explorer (internet); • Handles service calls to meet field employee needs and assures that equipment is available as required; • Oversees DOT (BIT) inspection program, and maintains equipment records accordingly; • Works with equipment vendors to supplement in-house repairs; • Documents equipment repairs, warranties, and parts in the Vehicle Management Software; • Creates, updates, and closes work orders and maintain service records; • Administers warranty and recall actions in a timely fashion; • Researches parts to ensure most economical options are procured; • Documents all parts and adjusts inventory based one parts demands; • Conducts parts reconciliation against FASTER to ensure accuracy; • Disposes of Solid and Hazardous Material Waste (Batteries, tires, used oil & filters, antifreeze); and • Embraces, promotes and is guided by the City's http://www.cityofconcord.org/page.asp?pid=5003
SELECTION PROCESS

Purpose Maintains parts and fuel inventory and orders and issues automotive maintenance parts, materials, supplies and equipment in fleet facility; coordinates incoming work orders for internal and external customers and provides maintenance schedule reports as necessary; assists in the disposal of City surplus vehicles, equipment, supplies, parts and materials; performs minor maintenance and repairs; responsible for the record maintenance of the City's fleet and related equipment; assists in providing pertinent information for cost recovery; compiles monthly outside agency billing statements and payments. Performs related work as required all within the context of the City's Mission of providing responsive, cost effective, and innovative local government services through a collaborative effort with the community to make Concord a city of the highest quality.
Equipment, Methods & Guidelines Information sources include web site information, vendor catalogs, inventory control records, office manuals, procedures and files. Uses telephone, computer terminal, Fleet Management and other various software programs, calculator, vehicle, and forklift.
Working Conditions The work is in a fleet office/garage setting, including occasional exposure to variable weather and vehicle maintenance related repair and cleaning products; hazardous materials for disposal. Pressures may be generated by deadlines, volume of work, frequent interruptions, or seasonal peak work periods.
Physical Demands Moderate to heavy lifting; stooping, reaching, pushing, pulling, carrying, manual dexterity and prolonged periods of standing and sitting.
Supervisory Guidance Received/Given Supervision received is intended to prescribe general objectives and methods of achieving objectives.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES INCLUDE, BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO: 1. Research parts and tool catalogs, vendor web sites or contacts vendors to secure comparative prices, availability, delivery, and discount information. Recommends and administers contracts that may include cooperative purchasing agreements. 2. Order standard materials and parts from approved supply sources to maintain stock above established reorder points. 3. Receive deliveries of materials and parts, verify quantities delivered, and inspect for damage; signs delivery tags. 4. Coordinate the administration of the on and off-site fuel program; issue on and off-site fuel, electric vehicle (EV) station cards and access, monitor fuel levels and reorder as needed. 5. Monitor maintenance service schedule appointments with internal and external customers. Issue monthly maintenance schedule reports to customers. 6. Input information into the Fleet Management Information System, or similar system, inventory module and code invoices as appropriate; use of office software. 7. Store and issue parts, tools, materials, and supplies. Record and document issues in Fleet Management Information System or similar system. 8. Coordinate garage waste stream pickups with recycling vendors including used tires, lubricants, and antifreeze. 9. Assist and work with Fleet Manager in identifying surplus vehicles, equipment, supplies, parts, and materials for disposal. 10. Post, update, and maintain a variety of catalogues and records that includes the technical library of vehicle repair manuals; operate computer keyboard and input work order and inventory information into the Fleet Management Information System or similar system. 11. Conduct physical inventory of all supply items; determine and maintain proper inventory levels. 12. Assist in gathering pertinent information for the City's cost recovery program. Information may include vehicle accident reports, inspecting equipment for damage, and providing estimates of damage. 13. Gather outside agency monthly billing and payment information and follows up on past due invoices. 14. Perform minor maintenance and repairs (e.g. tire changes, wiper blade and electrical bulb replacement, topping of fluids, other minor maintenance and repair as time permits, etc.). May assist Equipment Mechanics. 15. Shuttle vehicles to outside shops to obtain smog checks, repairs, front-end alignment, etc. Monitor and maintain annual smog information required for year-end reporting. 16. Perform road calls that do not require an equipment mechanic (e.g. minor repairs including jump starting a vehicle). 17. Perform other related duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS: Knowledge and Abilities Knowledge of automotive and equipment parts, materials and supplies and repair practices; established inventory control procedures, including receiving, storing, and issuing materials and supplies; office work procedures and practices, including the operation of a desktop computer; data entry, software programs. Ability to maintain accurate records relating to parts inventory, maintenance and repair history, vendor contracts, billing statements and invoices, and the on and off-site fuel program; maintain accurate records, including computer reports relating to the use, maintenance, insurance and disposal of automotive vehicles and related equipment; provide fleet data for management reports and decision making; make arithmetical computations with speed and accuracy; perform routine clerical work; make recommendations regarding utilization and maintenance requirements of fleet vehicles and related equipment; perform minor vehicle maintenance and repairs, read and interpret standard parts catalogues; access and use internet information; work independently and exercise initiative; ability to prioritize; understand and carry out oral and written instructions; write procedures; and establish and maintain cooperative and effective relationships with those contacted during the course of work.
Education/Experience Any combination equivalent to experience and education that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities would be qualifying. Generally, this will require:
Education: Satisfactory completion of high school or equivalent.
Experience: Three (3) years of progressively responsible administrative and technical experience in mixed fleet operations and maintenance, with at least one (1) and a half years' experience as an Automotive Parts Technician or as a Service Writer.
Certification(s): ASE Certification(s) are conditions of initial and continued employment.
Within the six (6) month probationary period, must obtain certification in: P1 (medium-heavy truck parts specialist) P2 (automobile parts specialist)
Within one (1) year of employment, must obtain certification in: C1 (automobile service consultant)
Ongoing recertification (P1R, P2R, and C1R) are conditions of continued employment.
Forklift certification or ability to obtain forklift certification during probation (first six months).
OTHER: Possession of a valid California Driver's License and a satisfactory driving record are conditions of initial and continued employment. Possess and have demonstrated excellent customer service and good communication skills.
