The City of Grand Island, Nebraska, is looking for a qualified candidate to fill their Wastewater Plant Chief Operator position. This position performs skilled and specialized taskss in the operation and maintenance of the Grand Island's Wastewater Treatment Plant. Essential Functions: Display a willingness to assume and visibly demonstrate mentoring and coaching, role modeling and leadership to staff members by recognizing and developing talent. Display honest, trustworthy, and ethical behavior when dealing with internal and external customers. Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work. Regular attendance that is punctual and dependable is required. Evaluate process parameters and make suggestions to optimize the operation of the plant. Troubleshoot process problems and provide recommendations for problem solving. Provide or assist with wastewater treatment plant operations and training to maintenance personnel; work with trainees to correct deficiencies; provide guidance throughout the performance of all duties. Report plant problems to upper level supervisory or management staff; consult with supervision to convey the needs of the treatment plant. Conduct regular inspections of the treatment plant and processes; perform readings of equipment and chemical levels. Collect wastewater samples; perform laboratory tests on wastewater samples; determine wastewater quality and wastewater characterization and adjust accordingly after reviewing with the operations engineer. Become certified on all laboratory procedures. Maintain various records; clean and maintain laboratory equipment, plant facilities and grounds; implement work orders in a timely manner; notify plant maintenance staff of problems requiring their attention. Maintain a log of wastewater treatment plant operations, laboratory results and equipment. Prepare Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator work schedules. Provide Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator shift fill-In where appropriate Assign work to wastewater treatment plant operator staff and follow up on assigned work to ensure it is completed in an efficient and effective manner. Perform Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator performance appraisals. Assist Wastewater Plant Operations Engineer to update the Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) for wastewater treatment plant operations. Collect influent and effluent samples and perform process control tests; record influent and effluent flows; monitor flow charts and gauges; adjust and maintain flows as needed for proper treatment. Maintain computerized databases of information regarding wastewater treatment plant operations and process control; input data needed for reports; produce various reports as requested. Basic understanding of SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) systems. Monitor pumps, blowers, and digesters; monitor and control UV disinfection; monitor readings on all plant equipment. Compute daily averages on chemical and flow levels and laboratory results; submit averages to supervisory staff. Perform related duties as assigned. Experience: Four years of experience equivalent to that of a Wastewater Plant Operator holding a Class IV Wastewater Operator's certificate in the City of Grand Island. A degree from an accredited college or univeristy with major course work in the following disciplines can be used to reduce the years of experience: Environmental Science/Engineering, Biology, Chemistry or related field. An associate degree can reduce the years of experience requirement by one year and a baccalaureate degree can reduce the years of experience requirements by two years. Taining: Equivalent to the completion of the twelth grade supplemented by addiitonal specialized training in wastewater treatment or a related field. License or Certificate: Possession of, or ability to obtain and maintain, an appropriate, valid driver's license. Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid Class IV Nebraska Wastewater Operator's certificate within 6 months of hire. Working Hours: Monday-Thursday 7 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Friday 7 a.m.-11 a.m. Position is required to be on-call. For more information and to apply, visit www.grand-island.com/jobs.
