The Transportation Maintenance Division within the Department of Transportation and Development has a vacancy for a dynamic and experienced Shop Supervisor to lead staff in the maintenance and repair of the Division’s fleet of vehicles and equipment. Incumbents must have strong attention to detail, be adaptable to change and have the ability to stay calm under pressure.
Applicants should have:
- A minimum of three (3) years of experience supervising the repair and maintenance of light vehicles and heavy equipment
- A minimum of three (3) years of experience leading the work of staff, including assigning work, planning, setting priorities, training staff, reviewing completed work and providing input to management regarding assigned staff performance
- Knowledge of Federal, State and local statutes, regulations, laws, rules, ordinances and codes related to vehicles and equipment commonly used in road maintenance
- Knowledge of occupational hazards, safety precautions, and safe operation of construction and maintenance equipment
- Experience supervising the completion of projects within established time and budget guidelines
- Ability to interpret vehicle troubleshooting charts, wiring diagrams, parts manuals and specifications
- Experience estimating annual material and equipment needs to assist in budgeting
- Effective interpersonal and communication skills with employees and the public, including willingness to listen to suggestions and provide constructive feedback
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, contractors, officials of government agencies, other County employees and the public
- Ability to effectively handle a wide range of situations and circumstances positively and professionally
Typical job duties may include:
- This position is responsible for the supervision of the Division’s parts room, including the ongoing inventory of parts.
- Plans schedules and manages projects; identifies construction and maintenance requirements within area of responsibility; determines efficient staffing levels and requisitions labor, equipment and supplies; ensures the completion of projects as scheduled.
- Develops, budget and annual work program for assigned functional area; participates in developing Division annual and supplemental budget; prepares cost analyses, time estimates and detailed material specifications; explains cost variances; determines optimal alternatives to transportation activities; approves and monitors expenditures for assigned functional area.
- Hires and supervises regular and temporary equipment maintenance workers to provide quality service to citizens and County staff; prepares performance evaluations; recommends and administers progressive discipline; conducts and/or facilitates staff training and development programs; promotes cooperative team efforts among staff and with other County departments.
- Oversees the annual inspection and maintenance of Transportation Maintenance vehicles and equipment; identifies hazards, determines maintenance requirements, and prioritizes activities based on condition and funding; responds to public inquiries and investigates complaints; determines and implements appropriate corrective action.
- Ensures compliance with safety procedures and environmental quality regulations; reviews safety concerns and suggestions with management and assigned staff; assists in planning and implementing safety training programs; supervises the handling and disposal of materials and hazardous substances used in the maintenance and repair of vehicles and equipment.
- Responds to requests for shop support during emergency transportation maintenance operations such as rain, wind, snow and ice storms, mud slides, flooding and other natural disasters.
- Represents the County with local government agencies, cities, advisory boards and the public; coordinates intergovernmental problem solving and cooperative activities; responds to inquiries and investigates complaints.
