The City of Everett is accepting applications on an open/competitive basis for the Civil Service examination process for Engineering Technician. This is technical, moderately complex, engineering support work performed in the field and office. Depending on the needs of the department to which the Engineering Technician is assigned, the work will involve technical support for a variety of tasks and projects related to the City’s Parks, Street and Traffic, and Public Works design; Surface Water Management; and GIS/utility mapping functions. Employees in this class may be expected to have technical knowledge and proficiencies, gained through training and experience, in one or more of the following areas depending on assignment: record keeping, graphics, project scheduling, hand drafting, computer-aided drafting, use of GIS software, field research, and the ability to make construction materials estimates and related calculations. The work of Engineering Technicians may be reviewed while in progress or upon completion by a technical supervisor. Once an employee gains proficiency in his/her assigned tasks, more independence and discretion is expected in handling projects and priorities. The current vacancy is in the CAD Group. ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS Successful completion of a two (2) year course in civil engineering technology at a community college or vocational institute, which included courses in trigonometry, algebra, surveying, civil engineering design, and AutoCAD; AND One (1) year of technical experience directly related to civil engineering applications, including work in surveying and/or AutoCAD; OR Any equivalent combination of civil engineering training or experience. EXAMINATION STEPS Responses to the supplemental questionnaire will be individually reviewed and evaluated (weighted 50%) Top-scoring applicants will be called to an oral interview (weighted 50%), tentatively scheduled for December 21, 2017 All vacancies in this job class will be filled from the ranked Civil Service register established from the examination process for 12 months. Extensive background checks will be conducted. IMPORTANT NOTES A passing grade of 70.00 or higher is required on all parts of the screening process for placement on the ranked Civil Service eligible register. The examination process is designed to sample and measure the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities. Applicants claiming veterans’ preference points in accordance with RCW 41.04.010 as amended and meeting eligibility criteria must submit form DD214 or other official military separation documentation that clearly indicates an honorable discharge from military service on or before the date filing closes.
