City Architect The City of Santa Monica is looking for a people leader and process manager to serve as it’s City Architect. Reporting to the Director of Public Works, the City Architect leads the planning, design and construction management of the City’s capital improvement program for new public buildings, open spaces and tenant improvements. The City Architect’s oversees the architecture services division with a staff of 18 employees, an operating budget of $2.8 million, and manages an average of 70 projects at one time. Known for providing innovative design solutions in the development and construction of efficient, sustainable, safe and inspiring public facilities and open spaces, the city of Santa Monica continues to set the pace in Southern California for world class design, urban place-making, pedestrian-scale walkability, and industry-leading green buildings that promote the wellbeing of those who live, work and play in the City. The ideal candidate is an innovative licensed architect with excellent interpersonal skills and a demonstrated understanding of architectural practice and design; experience working in highly engaged public processes; and a commitment to sustainable building practices. The candidate will be a working manager and team builder who has a track record of creating work processes and systems to guide the work of staff for timely project delivery. Outstanding leadership, project planning, management, delegation, oversight, and coaching skills are critical. The demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and respectfully to various stakeholders and represent the City at public meetings is essential.
