Accepting on-line applications only. The City of Eugene Public Works invites applications for the position of Traffic Operations Engineer. The person in this position will be responsible for ongoing monitoring, maintenance and improvement of the City's traffic signal and street lighting systems and assisting with traffic control device implementation in alignment with the City's Vision Zero Transportation safety goals and multimodal transportation system goals. The person in this position collaborates with many partners to implement city goals and policies; oversees the technical and operational work of the complex, multi-modal transportation traffic signal and street lighting systems in Eugene; and is responsible for contributing to, and implementing, the vision, mission and goals for 5 staff. Eugene has made it a priority to aggressively reduce greenhouse gas emissions and create a world class multimodal transportation system. The City supports safe routes to schools programs at two school districts, prioritizes Vision Zero, partners with the Lane Transit District to provide a nationally recognized transit system including the growing Bus Rapid Transit (EmX) network, and has one of the highest percentage of bicycle commuters in the United States. The Traffic Operations Engineer, as part of the Traffic Operations team, and will assist with facilitating the implementation of City goals and plans including Vision Zero Transportation Safety Action Plan, 2035 Transportation System Plan, Climate Recovery Ordinance and Envision Eugene (land use planning). Partners include work groups in Engineering, Planning and Development, public safety, City advisory boards, school districts, neighborhood associations, transportation advocacy and community organizations. The ideal candidate has the ability to understand the technical, operational, financial and legal elements of the transportation system while operating in an environment with diverse community interests and needs. A passion for transportation safety and state of the art multi-modal transportation system development is also desirable. This position reports directly to the Traffic Engineer, and helps coordinate transportation activities with other regional, state and local planning agencies. The Traffic Operations Engineer will assist the Traffic Engineer and may act in their stead to prepare for and present at meetings before City Council, various commissions, and the general public.
