Located 14 miles north of downtown Seattle along the I-5 corridor, Mountlake Terrace, Washington, pop. 21,000, is known for its convenient location, transportation connections, parks, trails, and first-class schools. The city boasts 355 acres of recreational attractions, including parks, play fields, year-round swimming, a sports pavilion, and public open space, along with a beach and dock at Lake Ballinger which allows fishing, boating, and waterfront recreation. A revitalizing Town Center with new mixed-use and wide sidewalks creates a traditional downtown feel, which includes shops, restaurants, offices, clinics, a library, and a variety of housing options. The City of Mountlake Terrace's Public Works Department is comprised of six divisions: Engineering Services, Equipment Rental, Sewer, Storm, Street and Water. The department's budget for 2017 is over $14.7 million. Working under the direction of the City Manager, the Public Works Director is responsible for the planning and organization of the engineering, operations, and maintenance functions of the department. The Public Works Director is also responsible for directly supervising an Operations Manager, City Engineer, Contracts & Capital Projects Manager, and Administrative Assistant. A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Civil Engineering, Public Administration or related field, and eight years of increasingly responsible experience in public works, managing or supervising operations, programs and services in one or more public works specialty areas, that includes four years of staff supervisory, budgetary, and management responsibility, preferably in a municipal or public sector environment. A master's degree in a related field is preferred. Candidates must be registered as a professional engineer (PE) with the State of Washington or be able to obtain same within 6 months of hire. Any combination of education and experience may be substituted as long as it provides the desired skills, knowledge, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job.
