The Public Works department is looking for qualified applicants to fill the position of Civil Engineer in Olathe, KS. This position is responsible for road and bridge project design and management for the unincorporated area of the county. The job duties of the Civil Engineer may include: Complete design of road, bridge, culvert, retaining walls, and drainage construction projects and perform design calculations (design speed, horizontal and vertical curves, drainage areas, hydrology and hydraulic capacity, etc.). Supervise and/or perform drafting and plan production, perform all quantity calculations, prepare and obtain all needed permits for the project (COE, DWR, NPDES, FEMA, etc.). Interpret and explain design and design standards to construction personnel and interface with the public as needed. Determine if a design change is better than moving a utility or purchasing high priced right-of-way, oversee surveys needed for design, perform Traffic Safety Studies, and design and ensure implementation of signing and traffic control plans. Review consultant construction plans, check design for accuracy and determine if consultant plans meet County requirements. Oversee the Bid Letting process for construction projects, prepare/review request for bid, specification and contract documents and plan sets per County statutes, and prepare Engineer's Cost Estimate. Interface with County Financial Management Department to set up Bid Opening and interface with prospective bidders. Requirements: A Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Kansas Professional Engineering license and five (5) years of Road and Bridge Design experience are required. A valid driver's license and acceptable driving record are also required. Working knowledge of CAD software and Microsoft Office is required.
