Plans, schedules, assigns and supervises the work of equipment mechanics and helpers maintaining a fleet of automotive and related mechanical equipment; assists in preparing equipment specifications and recommendations; reviews vehicle operating reports, noting repairs and maintenance completed and keeping records of the maintenance history of mobile units; diagnoses complex mechanical troubles and determines extent of necessary repairs; evaluates subordinate personnel; provides safety training; requisitions and/or purchases automotive parts, supplies and fuel; establishes and carries out a preventive maintenance program for City-owned vehicles; analyzes equipment operating records and costs; keeps time reports and payroll records; participates in preparing annual budget estimates for equipment repair shop; periodically confers with City department representatives to ascertain equipment costs and replacement needs; operates City vehicles; and performs related work as required. Education/Experience: Five (5) years of experience as a journey-level skilled mechanic, including at least one (1) year in a lead capacity.
License Required: Possession of a valid and appropriate California Driver's License. Class B drivers license highly desirable. Knowledge of: Operating principles of automotive equipment and techniques of repair and maintenance; principles of preventive maintenance; safe driving principles and practices; current automotive trends, specifications and standards; basic math; recordkeeping; proper methods, materials tools and equipment used in the mechanic's trade; general principles of supervision and training; and appropriate safety precautions and procedures. Ability to: Lay out, assign and supervise the work of others; perform difficult engine and other automotive repairs; keep accurate and concise records and make reports; accurately diagnose motorized equipment repair needs; read, write and perform mathematical calculations at the level required for successful job performance; operate a vehicle observing legal and defensive driving practices; understand and carry out oral and written instructions; and establish and maintain effective relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
