Primary Purpose: Performs as a working supervisor of the maintenance and repair of City and Pace vehicles and equipment.*
*Equipment Defined: City equipment, cars, trucks, dump trucks, street sweepers, tractor loaders, track backhoes, air compressors, snow plows, salt spreaders and other snow equipment, pumps, saws, sewer vacuum flushing equipment, aerial equipment, hydraulic systems, Pace Transit buses and related equipment and miscellaneous shop equipment.
Supervision Received: This position works under the general supervision of the Deputy Director of Public Works.
Supervision Exercised: Supervises the work of five (5) full-time Mechanics and one (1) Maintenance Aid (? of work day)
Salary range $29.55/hr to $44.33/hr Starting salary range +/- $37.50/hr based on qualifications
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Directs and supervises the work of personnel involved in maintaining and repairing vehicles and equipment. Plans, schedules, and assigns work; Establishes procedures and guidelines for the routine maintenance, repair and operation of City vehicles and equipment. Complies with Pace contract and regulations to keep buses running at all times. Responsible for promoting and maintaining a safe fleet/shop environment.
- Establishes work priorities; monitors work in progress and assists when necessary; ensures workers follow departmental policies and procedures. Checks and verifies all work orders to ensure properly completed. Maintains records of time and attendance for all supervised employees; reviews and evaluates assigned employee performance.
- Manages the fuel tanks operations including monitoring, reporting, and complying with state and local regulations. Responsible for City radio system operations and maintenance. Part of on-call Snow Duty Foreman rotation.
- Requisitions repair supplies, materials and equipment as needed. Inventories parts and supplies on an on-going basis and replenishes as required. Maintains records of work performed and materials used.
- Ensures that Material Safety Data Sheet information is available to all shop personnel. Responds to and participates in emergency response, as needed.

Education and Experience
Required Minimum Qualifications: The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills, and/or ability required. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. Education: High School Diploma or GED equivalent. Experience: Two (2) years of progressive experience as a supervisor or foreman, managing personnel in an automotive fleet maintenance shop. Experience in the use of computers is required. Five (5) years of prior municipal (or similar) work experience preferred. Certification or License: A valid State of Illinois Commercial Driver's License (CDL), Class A or B, or equivalent, required. Ability to meet and maintain DOT physical examination requirements preferred. Required Knowledge, Skills, and Proficiencies: Knowledge of the occupational hazards involved in the safety and precautions necessary in performing equipment maintenance and repair work. Knowledge of principles and practices of electrical, pneumatic and mechanical systems for auto/truck and various equipment. Working skill in exercising good judgment, maintaining confidentiality, and making responsible decisions in accordance with established policies and procedures; prioritizing, organizing, and performing work independently; operating a personal computer with the software and programs necessary to perform the work of the department; planning and maintaining complex office and record keeping sequences and systems; communicating effectively orally and in writing; composing and preparing correspondence.
