This is a full-time position in the Sub-surface Maintenance Section of the Public Works Department. The sub-surface maintenance section is primarily responsible for underground piping system(s) construction, repair, and maintenance; including both storm drain system and sanitary sewer collection system piping and appurtenances. The Public Works Supervisor is responsible for supervising and overseeing the daily operation of the surface maintenance, subsurface maintenance, sewer, storm drainage, or traffic sections of Public Works Operations. This position is distinguished from the Public Works Technician Senior, by its full supervisory responsibilities. This position supervises other staff and reports to the Deputy Public Works Director/Operations. May be required to work variable shifts, respond after hours, and to be on-call for one week periods. Typical Job Duties: These duties are a representative example; position assignments may vary depending on the division this position reports in and the business needs of the department and organization. This position:Supervises staff including: assigning work, providing guidance and assistance, preparing performance summaries, employee development, hiring, disciplinary recommendations, etc. Supervises sectional operations specific to assignment. Creates and reviews a variety of documentation, logs, and/or reports.Prepares service requests and work orders utilizing the computerized work order system; provides electronic documentation of work performed.Investigates customer concerns and complaints; follows up to ensure appropriate action and resolution. Oversees the work of contractors; generates contracts and monitors compliance with contract specifications; prepares specifications for purchasing materials and equipment. Participates in a variety of work planning and coordination meetings; develops and implements resulting policies, procedures process improvements. Provides support to other operational sections and divisions involving analysis and evaluation. Provides input for the preparation of the division budget; monitors expenditures for materials and services, capital outlay and capital improvement project (CIP) budgets. Scope of assigned area of responsibility will depend on departmental structure and is at the discretion of the Public Works Director. Upholds the values of the organization and has strong customer service orientation. Must have the ability to handle job stress and interact effectively with others in the workplace. Must be honest and truthful in all tasks and responsibilities. Performs other related projects and duties as assigned. Demonstrates regular, reliable and punctual attendance. Job Qualifications: Ideally, sufficient years of progressively responsible supervisory and public works maintenance experience; and/orGraduation from high school, and/or equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above. Current technical/professional knowledge of complex principles, methods, standards and techniques associated with the scope of work of a recognized profession, such as: Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills. Public infrastructure construction methods and materials.Working knowledge of public contracting and purchasing. Requires possession of a valid driver's license by date of hire.
