**This employment opportunity is open to all qualified candidates** The City of Oxnard's Public Works Department is seeking a Traffic Engineer with strong technical and customer service skills to be part of the team. The ideal candidate will have a solid communication and interpersonal skills and demonstrable experience directing traffic impact studies, preparing engineering development plans and developing grant resources. WORK SCHEDULE: The normal work week is 9/80, Monday through Friday, 8:00 am-6:00 pm with alternating Fridays off. This position may be required to be available to work additional hours as needed to respond to workload needs. This position is/is not governed by the overtime provisions of the federal Fair Labor Standards Act and is/is not eligible for overtime pay. SUMMARY: Under administrative direction, supervises and participates in activities of the Traffic Safety and Operations section of the Public Works Department, provides professional and technical staff assistance to the Public Works Director; performs related duties as required. DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS: The Traffic Engineer is the advanced journey level class in the professional traffic design engineering series responsible for management of the complex traffic engineering projects as well as division professional staff. This class is distinguished from the next lower level class of Associate Traffic Engineer by supervisory and management responsibilities for the traffic design engineering unit. SUPERVISION RECEIVED/EXERCISED: The Public Works Director provides administrative direction. Exercises general direct and indirect supervision over professional, technical and support personnel. Prepares plans and specifications for the installation, removal or replacement of traffic signs, markings, protective structures and street lights; plans and prepares work orders for the installation of traffic signs, traffic control devices and street lighting systems. Performs complex engineering calculations; analyzes materials and design data submitted to the City; checks and analyzes Environmental Impact Reports and Traffic Studies; provides engineering data and cost estimates for the City budget. Collects and analyzes traffic data related to traffic hazards, accidents, volume, flow, speed, direction, circulation and road capacity; participates in the work of collecting, tabulating, and analyzing traffic and parking information. Acts as project manager for assigned capital projects including management, coordination and progress reporting of the project ensuring timely progress of environmental analysis, land acquisition/rights-of-way, plans/specifications, contracting, construction, completion procedures and status and budget monitoring. Coordinates the selection process for consultants and prepares contracts; provides contract administration on assigned projects. Serves as staff to a variety of City commissions, boards and committees. Investigates field problems affecting property owners, contractors and maintenance operations. Responds to legal claims against the City as appropriate; answers interrogatories; gives depositions; completes grant applications for traffic signal, safety, and other related projects. Coordinates engineering projects between contractors and the City; administers and enforces City codes and standards on engineering projects. Qualifications Education and/or Experience: Any combination of education and experience that has provided the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary for a Traffic Engineer. A typical way of obtaining the required qualifications is to possess: Education: A Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in traffic engineering or civil engineering, including traffic engineering coursework. Experience: Six years of increasingly responsible professional experience in traffic engineering. License/Certificate: Possession of a current Certificate of Registration as a Professional Civil or Traffic Engineer in the State of California. Additional certifications, licenses, endorsements and training may be required, depending on assignment. You may be required to submit documented proof of these requirements.
