Under general direction of the City Manager, the Director of Public Works is responsible for the direction, planning, review and management of the Department in the areas of street maintenance and traffic control, water and wastewater system maintenance and management, drainage facility maintenance, project management of City constructed infrastructure improvements, and brush services. The Director of Public Works will work closely with the City Engineer and Director of Planning in the areas of infrastructure planning and development review. The position’s extensive work with outside agencies and property owners requires excellent communication skills, including oral, written, and presentation. Familiarity with development review processing, City codes and State and Federal requirements in the area of public works is essential for effective performance. Applicants must have the ability to multi-task in a busy office environment and simultaneously direct multiple maintenance and construction projects, including management of personnel. This position requires a bachelor's degree in engineering, construction management, or a closely related field from an accredited college or university. Registration as a Professional Engineer in Texas is desired, but not required. Coursework and training that demonstrates a commitment to lifelong learning and practice in this field, including private sector experience that mirrors the above knowledge, skills, abilities, and tasks will be considered in lieu of a degree. The ideal candidate will have at least seven years relevant experience, including three years of administrative and supervisory responsibility with budget experience. Possession of, or the ability to obtain, a Class C Water/Wastewater license, or higher, from the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality is required.
